Looking ahead? Beechcroft suffers first loss of year
Brookhaven High School
Brookhaven 84, Beechcroft 65
One of the most hyped up match up's in the City League for the 2008-09
season was set for this Friday between Beechcroft and Northland.
However Beechcroft had another obstacle to get past before their meeting
with national ranked Northland High School. Would they come out tonight
undefeated against a Brookhaven team that many believe has "fallen off"?
What followed was anything but pretty for the Cougars of Beechcroft, as
they struggled all night with the aggressive defense of Brookhaven who
forced many turnovers throughout the game. Beechcroft in the first
quarter was able to sustain runs to keep the score even, but a 12-12
score midway thru the first quarter was the closest they came to beating
the Bearcats.
Brookhaven led 20-12 after the first quarter, and 42-27 leading into the
locker room. Brookhaven used a 20 point 3rd quarter to extend their lead
to 62-42 heading into the final quarter. Brookhaven dominated on both
sides of the ball and outscored Beechcroft every quarter except the 4th
quarter.
Leading scorers for the Bearcats of Brookhaven were Terrance Watkins
who dropped 35 points and Devon Montgomery who added 17. The
Cougars were led by Josh Gouch's 24 points, while Dominique Freeman
added 13. Beechcroft suffers their first loss of the season, their record
now stands at 8-1. Brookhaven improves to 5-4 on the year.

Scotts Knock Off The Warriors At Home

"Northland puts their stamp on yet another city
league opponent"
The Vikings traveled over to Linden McKinley coming off of a huge win
over Cincinnati Aiken Saturday night at the Play by Play Classic at the
Schottenstein Center. Would a letdown be in the making on the behalf of
the Vikings? Or how about a beat down, on behalf of the Vikings?
J.D. Weathspoon again got the Vikings off to a hot start by taking an
Alley-Oop from point guard Trey Burke, as done before in previous
games. Back up the court the Panthers went on the very next possession,
and they scored on the count on LaQuan Kirk. Could Linden be ready to
battle toe to toe with Northland? Not quite, Northland would score on
several trips to their basket, and just like that Northland grabbed a double
digit lead. DeQuan Hairston of Linden would lead his team with 4 points in
the first quarter but that wasn't close to being enough. The Vikings would
eventually score 25 points in the quarter, led by Jared Sullinger with 10.
NHS lead 25 to 7. The second period didn't go any better for Linden. At
times they tried to play a full court trap, but it was not successful.
Northland broke their trap continuously which led for either easy lay-ups
or allowed them to set up in their offensive sets easier. Again, rebounding
was a major factor for the Vikings. Sullinger was the key component for
that by grabbing 13 boards in the first half alone. Going into half-time,
Northland led 47 to 19. The leading scorers were Jared for Northland with
16, and Michael Bennett and DeQuan Hairston both with 4 for Linden.
As the third quarter began, Linden came out being aggressive, and not
allowing the 20 plus deficit to be a factor in how hard they would work.
Linden did just that, which you have to give credit to their coach,
Leanthony Jones and staff. They fought hard, and played with heart,
paying no attention to the clock, and score. As for Northland, guards
Dimonde Hale and Trey Burke carried the team scoring 8 and 7 points
respectively. There was no looking back for Northland from the onset, and
they were definitely not looking back at this point in the game. By quarters
end, the Vikings led 68 to 31. Northland played keep away with the
Panthers for a while to keep the clock ticking. Northland's reserves came
into the game and handled themselves pretty well, despite some careless
turnovers. The final score was 86 to 47, NHS. The leading scores were
Sullinger of Northland with 22, and Bennett and D. Hairston with 9. Up next
for Northland is the now one loss rivals Beechcroft Cougars this Friday at
NHS. For Linden, they host Centennial.
