"Mifflin gives Northland their best punch, but it was still not
enough. Sullinger hurt"
Mifflin came into this match-up tonight huge underdogs. As it has been said before, there are
no games that are won on paper. If the Vikings thought they were going to cruise through this
contest with no real threat from the Punchers, they had another thing coming. For a while.
The Punchers came out with a burst of energy in the first quarter that caught the Vikings off
guard. What Mifflin lacked in the obvious height category they made up for it in their hustle,
tenacity, and the will to want to win. They were grabbing all of the loose balls, some rebounds
surprisingly, and frustrated Northland. Jared, for the second time in consecutive games had to
depart early from the game with two personal fouls in the first quarter. Would the rest of his
team come together or fall apart? Weatherspoon led all scorers and spearheaded his team
while Sullinger sat on the bench dropping 9 points. After one, the score was 16-13, NHS. In the
second period, with Jared still on the sideline, Northland was able to gain a little more control of
the game. But they still made a lot of mistakes, mishandled passes, erratic passes, and a lack
luster effort guarding the perimeter. Javon Cornley was the man this quarter as he put up 9 of
his 11 first half points. At half, the score was 35 to 26, NHS.
The third quarter started off with a steal steal by Jared Sullinger at half court, who took it all the
way for a slam dunk, but as he let go of the rim, he appeared to slip and come down pretty hard
on his wrist, which seemed to bother him the rest of the time he was on the court. Northland's
defense picked up and help Mifflin to 8 total points in the third period. On the other hand, the
Vikings pulled away, behind the lead of Dimonde Hale and J.D. Weatherspoon. The quarter was
going good for Northland until Sullinger came down wrong on someone's ankle, and he was in
agony as he lay on the floor. That would end the night for Jared, as he hobbled off the court to
the locker room. At the end of the third, it was 59 to 34, NHS. The fourth period faired a little
better for the Punchers, but too little, way too late. The final score was 79 to 45, NHS. After the
victory, I know Jared's injury is the most important thing on their mind. They travel to
Brookhaven Friday, where they may definitely need him.
