Brookhaven Bearcats (1-2, 0-1) vs. Northland Vikings (3-0, 1-0)
"Rivals Face Off"
Brookhaven and Northland came into this opening city league game having faced similar opponents,
Division II powerhouse Dayton Dunbar Wolves. But they didn't have similar outcomes. Brookhaven hosted
Dayton and lost by 27 points, and Northland hosted Dayton, and they won by 6 points. Would that factor
predetermine tonight's outcome?
Northland started off the game business as usual, tough defense and patient, but explosive offense.
Brookhaven on the other hand seemed to play keep away on offense, as if they were not really trying to
score. They held the ball at the top of the key with no intentions on giving a threat to score. Kind of
reminiscent of last seasons play-off match-up with Northland against Watkins Memorial. Whatever the
strategy was, it worked on the behalf of Northland, who held the Bearcats scoreless through the first
quarter. Weatherspoon led all scorers with six points. 15 - 0, NHS. In the second quarter Brookhaven
broke the scoreless streak on the account of junior forward Craig Sealey. The Bearcats didn't stop there
as they prevented Northland from scoring on their next offensive possession, and countered with another
score of their own. Brookhaven's senior guard Terrance Watkins chipped in and stole the ball on a
inbound pass, and put up his first points of the game. The block party was on tonight, and Northland was
throwing it. Throwing the Bearcats shots that is. They blocked six shot attempts through the first two
quarters, and three of them by Mr. Sullinger. Even that did not deter Brookhaven, as their captain, Watkins,
took it right to the rim for lay-ups or stop and pops. His determination helped the Bearcats score 17 points
in the quarter, led by his team leading 9. The bad thing going for the Cats was that besides Watkins and
Sealey scoring, only on other person scored in the first half. They would definitely need more help from
their teammates if they wanted to stay in the game. Northland seemed to cool off in the second period,
would they blow another lead like they did with Dayton? The score at half was 29 - 17, NHS. Leading
scorers; BHS-Watkins-9, NHS-Sullinger-9.
When it comes to rivalry games you expect no one to back down, and neither one of these teams did.
Jared got into foul trouble early in the third quarter, and Brookhaven seized the moment to start making
their run. The Bearcats kept the ball out of point guard Trey Burke's hands at times in their offensive set,
and when that happened, some turnovers were forced. With Sullinger on the bench, that cleared the way
for Brookhaven to start attacking the middle of Northland's defense, and they did with success. But would
that be enough? Craig Sealey was able to get a few easy baskets down low and guards were able to
penetrate more. At the end of the third period, it was 38 - 28, NHS. As the fourth quarter began, the Vikings
Sullinger entered back into the game with three fouls. And it was back to usual for them. J.D.
Weatherspoon got back into his groove as he and Jared threw down multiple dunks, including some
facials. Northland pulled away in the last quarter before subbing in the reserves. The final score was 56 -
38, NHS. Brookhaven takes on Whetstone Friday, as Northland is at Centennial.

Statement Game!
After posting a combined 3-36 record last two season the Briggs Bruins have high expectations for
2008-'09. The Bruins are lead by 6'2" Senior guard Josh Allen, a first team All-City selection last season.
The Bruins were also counting on Junior Giovannie Cartwright an All-City selection himself. Cartwright
may be out the entire season with an injury, but Senior point guard Anthony Tyler has picked up the slack.
Last evening the Bruins made a roar to the rest of the City to take notice. They beat Africentric handily
89-75. Josh Allen Led the Bruins with 27 points. Anthony Tyler chipped in with 12. The play of the night
was made by Sekou Spain, who's 16 points and dunk early in the third quarter gave the Bruins a boost.
Up next for the Bruins is a trip to Independence on Friday. The Bruins have another chance to gain
respect in the City South with a win.

Eastmoor @ Independence
Doug Thorpe scored 20 points, as the Eastmoor Warriors held on to defeat the Independence 76ers 73-
66 in a City League South opening game. Eastmoor started the contest with a 7-2 run as they took a 24-15
lead at the end of the first quarter. The 76ers would make a run in the second quarter to tie the score up at
30. Eastmoor would counter that run, taking a 38-32 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Eastmoor inside and outside game gave Independence fits as the Warriors raced to a
61-46 score heading into the fourth quarter. In the 4th, Independence cut the lead to as low six. That’s the
closet the 76ers would get as Eastmoor held on for the victory.
Independence was led by Brandon Tyler who finished with 19 points and Greg Dawkins who poured in 16.
For Eastmoor, Denzel McDougald had 15 and Michael Lester finished with 13 to go along with Thorpe’s

Centennial @ Beechcroft
The visiting Stars of Centennial came into their Tuesday night matchup against the
Beechcroft Cougars undersized and what appeared to be overmatched. Centennial
however, had other plans, starting on a hot streak to begin the game and led 24-22 at the
end of the 1st quarter. If you enjoy low scoring defensive battles, then this was not the game
for you, as both teams seemed to be on fire in the first half dropping 3-pointers left and right.
Beechcroft held a slight 43-40 halftime edge.
In the second half however Beechcroft’s size advantage started to take over. Beechcroft
slowly pulled away in the third quarter and going into the 4th quarter led 65-54. Beechcroft
continued their hot shooting in the 4th quarter and at one point led by 24 points. Leading
Beechcroft was junior Rasean Moore, who scored 21 points and Josh Gouch who added 20
points. Centennial was led by Matthew Jones’ 18 points, which included three 3-pointers.
Beechcroft’s Mike Petrie dropped four 3-pointers to finish the game with 12 points.
Beechcroft’s record now stands at a perfect 3-0, while Centennial dropped to 1-3 on the
season. Beechcroft’s next game is Friday as they travel to take on Mifflin, while Centennial
hosts the #12 team in the nation and undefeated, Northland Vikings.
