"Northland rolls against Whetstone"

T
he Vikings cruised to a victory Tuesday over the East Tigers, easily dismantling them.
Would they be able to do the same against the up and coming Whetstone Braves led by
their 6'9" Center/Forward Tanner Furno. With the Vikings Jared Sullinger standing at equal
height, we would see who would get the best of one another.

Jared would win the first of many battles between him and Furno with an Alley-Oop from J.D.
Weatherspoon to start the game off. From there, the Vikings would quickly get on a roll by
changing the shot selection of the Braves, out rebounding them, and pushing the ball up
court on fast breaks making easy transition points. Whetstone put themselves into a deep
hole being down early in the first period 15 to 0, and they could not buy a jump shot. Even
Tanner could not use his height to his advantage as he came up short on his field goal
attempts also. Northland was led in the first quarter by Sullinger and Hale who put up 10
and 9 points respectively. After one, it was 27 to 6, NHS. In the second quarter,Whetstone's
Tanner Furno finally scored his first points of the game. The Vikings did a good job on
defense keeping Furno out of sync, and leaving it to his other teammates to do the scoring.
Northland slowed down the tempo some, which allowed the Braves to almost double their
first quarter points by putting in 11, to the Vikings 15. Still by half-time, the score was 42 to
17, all Northland.

You would hope that Whetstone would have not packed it in going into half-time, and come
out playing hard to prove they were better than what they displayed. Well, that did not happen
in the least bit. Jared and company came out with fresh legs and took it to Whetstone like a
big brother who bullies the younger sibling. Not to mention that Vikings Forward Javon
Cornley did a heck of a job on Furno, helping to limit him to 1 point in the third quarter.Trey
Burke stole the ball several times to turn them into easy points. Sullinger had the best
quarter yet scoring 11 points, with a number of post moves that the Braves could not stop.
Northland outscored Whetstone 29 to 4 in the third period. Going into the 4th quarter, the
Vikings leading 69 to 21. The Braves came out of the break with a different attitude. As if they
wanted to win. That's how they should of came out in the beginning of the game. Tanner
Furno finally showed a little flash of what he could do, grabbing rebounds and scoring
points. Albeit it was not against Sullinger or Cornley. The Vikings even kept the tempo up
when Coach Sullinger put the reserves in the game. Final score,88 to 38, NHS. Another
convincing victory for the Vikings, and stay undefeated, but will they be ready for Saturday's
match-up against Cincinnati Aiken at the Schottenstein Center. The Whetstone Braves host
East next Tuesday. Stay tuned.............................

Cougars tame Panthers

Beechcroft High School

Beechcroft 98, Linden Mckinley 65

In a very odd turn of events last season Linden upset Beechcroft by a single point in their
first match-up. At first it didn’t seem very odd, but the rematch left many scratching their
heads. In the second game between the two schools Beechcroft looked for revenge, and
did so, dominating Linden by 40 points. This led to tonight with many wondering what to
expect. Would Linden pull the upset off again?

The Cougars wanted to make it known that there would be no upset tonight as they took a
21-15 advantage after one quarter and continued their onslaught of points scoring 31
points in the 2nd quarter to hold a 52-32 halftime advantage. If you like dunks you certainly
missed quite a show as both Rasean Moore and Andrew Devlin of Beechcroft flew above
the rim for many highlight dunks in the first half. In the second half Beechcroft continued
their dominance stretching their lead to 33 points, leading 78-45 after the third quarter.
The only question heading into the 4th was if the Cougars would score 100. For the most
part it seemed unlikely as the Cougars only scored 1 point in the first three-and-half
minutes of the 4th quarter, turning the ball over many times. Linden capitalized on many of
Beechcroft’s mistakes but the point deficit was simply too much. The Cougars fixed the
turnover problems and came just short of the 100 point mark.

All 13 Cougars got into the scoring column tonight as Rasean Moore led Beechcroft with
15 points, while DJ Bridges and Josh Gouch each added 10 points. The Panthers were
led by Sean Rogers’ 17 points. Next Tuesday Beechcroft travels to take on the Bearcats of
Brookhaven, while Linden hosts undefeated Northland. With the win tonight Beechcroft
remains perfect with an impressive 8-0 record, Linden drops to an even 4-4.

Eastmoor, On The Ropes

M
ichael Lester scored on lay up with 8 seconds remaining, as Eastmoor escaped with a
44-43 victory over Africentric. The win is the Warriors sixth straight over the Nubians.

Africentric opened up the game on a 12-0 run, led by Breaker Heller who scored all 12 of
the points. The Nubians would go into halftime with a 22-18 lead. Trailing 43-36 with under
3:00 remaining, Eastmoor scored eight unanswered points taking its first and only lead of
the game on Lester's lay up. Africentric shot attempt would fail as time expired sealing the
Eastmoor victory.

Heller led all scorers with 20 points. Doug Thorpe finished with 15 for Eastmoor. The
Warriros next game will be Janurary 13th at Walnut Ridge. The Nubians will host
Independence.
