Whetstone vs Independence
City League North vs. City League South  Play-off Clash

The Whetstone Braves and the Independence 76ers may be in the City
League, but being in two different divisions, they did not get to play each
other this year. Who would it be, the North or the South?

Either Whetstone came into this game with an extra shot of adrenaline or
Independence left their game on the bus for the first quarter. The Braves out
muscled them down low courtesy of 6'9" Tanner Furno, they executed their
offense almost to perfection while the 76ers could not make a shot to save
their lives. Independence did not score until three minutes were left in the
first period. At quarter's end, the score was 13 to 4, Whetstone. The second
quarter was nothing too different, Independence continued to struggle to get
anything going while Whetstone made the most of their opportunities. At the
half, it was 23 to 7, Whetstone.

In the third, the 76ers came to life. After scoring a few back to back baskets,
Independence went with a full court trap, and it worked in their favor. The
Braves struggled to handle it, and they turned the ball over numerous times,
and their 16 point lead slipped away. With 2:44 left in the third, the score was
27 to 25, Braves. Whetstone finally settled down to break the press and at
the end of the quarter the score was 35 to 27, WHS. Both teams saved the
best for last as they scored 56 points combined during the last period.
Whetstone would get a lead, and Independence would battle back, but it was
too little to late for the 76ers as they lost 60 to 58. Looking back, that first
quarter slump is probably would did the 76ers in. Whetstone will play it's city
league north foe the Northland Vikings next Saturday at the coliseum. Tanner
Furno lead the Braves with 23 points, and Brandon Tyler led the 76ers with
20.

Pesky Panthers fall short to Cougars

Coming off a first round bye the Cougars of Beechcroft headed into this
match up coming off a tough loss in a last second scheduled game against
Cleveland Heights to finish the regular season, prior to that the words
scoring and Cougars went hand-in-hand together. The question was would
the Cougars continue their trend or slip up in their first game.

Scoring last night however was at a premium and the pesky Panthers
showed they came to play and didn’t want to go home early. Beechcroft held
an 11-9 advantage after one quarter and entered the half with a season low
20 points, holding a 20-13 advantage. The locker room seemed to help as
both teams produced more points in the 3rd quarter than they had the whole
first half. Despite a surge by the Panthers, Beechcroft held a 40-35
advantage heading into the 4th quarter.

The Cougars were led by seniors Dominique Freeman, who had 18 points
and Josh Gouch who had 11 points. The games only get tougher from here
out as the Cougars next face 5th seeded Dublin Coffman, next Saturday 3/7
at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Game time is 10am
