Northland vs Whetstone III 3/7/2009
|

Northland sends Whetstone home, advances to the District Finals
In many sports scenarios, meeting a team three times in one year, and winning all three
is usually a tough task to complete. Was Northland up to it?
Northland put on a highlight show in the first period of the Columbus 3 district
semi-finals. Mr. "Highlight" Weatherspoon threw down three monstrous dunks that got
the crowd on their feet, one of them being from the assist from point guard Trey Burke
on a alley-hoop. When you lead by 12 and the best player on your team has not
scored, you're in a pretty good situation. Burke chipped in with two tri-fecta's of his own.
At the end of the first quarter it was 20-8, NHS.
This time around Tanner Furno got things going for his team in the second period. He
maneuvered his way in the paint, something he did not do in the previous two meetings
against Northland. Whetstone went on a 11-6 run, bringing the score to 26-19, before
Northland's head coach "Satch" Sullinger called a time-out to regroup his team. At the
half, it was 33 to 25, Vikings.
Both teams put on a spectacular showing in the third. It went back and forth from
beginning to end, as each team scored 15 points a piece. The braves got as close as
four, and going into the last quarter, it was 48-40, NHS.
The Vikings finally got a hold of the game in the fourth period, and pulled away with the
final, 64-50. The braves were led by their Senior forward Tanner Furno with 23, and
Trey Burke led the vikings with 17. Next Saturday is the columbus 3 district finals
against westerville north. It's not south, but it's close enough.
